Last Thursday Campus Safety and the Maintenance Department replaced the torn American flag flying on the east side of Ransom Hall, according to Director of Facilities Operation Greg Widener. The Kenyon flag was also tattered and was taken down, but with no replacement.
“They get tattered very quickly,” Widener said. “The winds here are kind of fierce.”
Since weather conditions are tough, frequent replacements are a necessity even on ripstop nylon flags. Maintenance keeps several American flags, in order to display “a nice, clean, new flag” for events, according to Widener. They don’t keep replacement Kenyon flags and must wait to receive the replacement.
The old flag, which had several tears, will be disposed of in the proper ceremony by the Knox County Boy Scouts.
